Which Social Network Works Best for You – Twitter or Facebook

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The upsurge furor for social media has led almost every blogger to actively participate in a range of social networking websites. This increasing popularity has led to fierce competition among networks making it difficult to point towards one “top” social networking website.

In this article, I will discuss the dominant contenders “Twitter” and “Facebook” that are out to secure the top position. Both of these websites have succeeded in attracting a staggering number of unique visitors with promises of two different virtual social worlds.

How Different is Twitter from Facebook?

  • Facebook has been originally created to act as a connecting hub for far of family members and old friends, while, Twitter was not launched or marketed as a friend-meeting target.
  • Facebook users are only able to connect to particular networks that they have joined whereas, Twitter users can update everyone concerning them.
  • The additional features such as instant messaging, e-mail, image sharing and video sharing are easy to function in Facebook, while, Twitter  features take some time to get used to.

Why Users LOVE Twitter:

  • Twitter enables simple navigations and update processes
  • Gives you a larger exposure other than just the family and friends circle
  • Offer a number of new and updates applications such as Twitterific, Twhirl and  Summize
  • Acts as a simple communication device and allows quick responses
  • No need for filling out formalities for following anyon

Why Users LOVE Facebook:

  • Facebook is an absolute pleasure for people who are addicted to keeping connected with old friends
  • Also, for those who want to get introduced to a new set of acquaintances
  • It offers a one in all comprehensive deal and precludes the to and fro of instant message tools.
  • People are increasingly relying on Facebook for quality features such as e-mail, video sharing and image sharing
  • Facebook also offers the option of privacy allowing information access to your limited circle through the public and private profiles
  • It has also emerged as a powerful platform for advertising and marketing brands

Is Twitter an Emerging Threat for Facebook?

When considering the illustrious Facebook and Twitter, ask yourself:

When was the last time you came across an interesting post on MySpace, StumbleUpon, Del.icio.us or Digg. Frankly speaking, Facebook and Twitter have almost replaced the obsession of Youtube as well…. wouldn’t you agree?

According to the figures posted on Compete.com, Twitter has reported a climbing figure of 22 million US visitors over the past month, while, Facebook has posted 122 million monthly visits of US users which is an another monthly growth. These analytics clearly indicate the increasing popularity of Twitter and the present dominance of Facebook.

As Facebook turns five years this year, do you think that the growing popularity and user traffic of Twitter can threaten the Facebook “top” position anytime soon?

Various researchers have reported users to be spending an average of an hour or two on connecting with
Facebook while, the latter combing through Twitter. In fact, recent statistics indicate a similar trend in near future:

The Analysis graphs compiled by complete.com indicate an upward but constant number of unique visitors for both Facebook and Twitter with Facebook leading the charts by a far margin. While, the figures for Myspace suggest a loss of unique visitors over the past few months.

The Monthly Normalized Metrics Statistics updated in August 2009 point towards a higher positive yearly change for Twitter than for Facebook even though, Facebook has shown a higher positive monthly change.

Which Social Network Works Best for You?

I have been contending Facebook and Twitter to and fro with Facebook as the top contender and Twitter as an emerging one. I have a lot to ask you all:

  • Which social network is more functional for you and which offers more interactive enjoyment?
  • Which is more workable and profitable social media for a graphic designer?
  • Will they fade away in a few years or become the next Google?
