A Showcase Of Cricket World Cup, 1975-2011:

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Today I am sharing history of cricket world cup as we all know that on 19th February the first match will be played. Everybody is excited especially those who are cricket freaks and all nations are ready to support and cheer their country. This year world is hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. This year it will be 10th world cup. Here I just wanted to share some history Cricket World Cup started in 1975, 2011 Cricket World Cup is going to be the 10th cricket World Cup. First three Cricket World Cups were played in England. West Indies was the outstanding team who won the first two World Cup in ’75 and ’79 and all the cricket fans were expecting that West Indies will do the hat-trick but everyone was stunned by Kapil Dev from India, yes India won the third World Cup in ’83.

After the three tournaments in 1987 the Cricket World Cup was taken outside England and for the first time it was played in subcontinent. The fourth Cricket World Cup was also stunning because the winner was not West Indies or India. Australia won the fourth World Cup. Australia defeated england by 7 runs. World Cup was played in England for the first time but may be the England team was not very lucky in Cricket because England this time fell short by 22 runs against Pakistan and Pakistan was the winner of fifth World Cup (1992).

Sri Lanka shocked the world, first with their ’15-over tactics’ and then going on to win the world cup. Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharna set the tone and typified Sri Lanka’s apprach in the world cup- fearless, aggresive and nothing-to-lose. Ashanka Gurusinha, Aravinda De Silva, Arjuna Ranatunga, Hashan Tillakratne and Roshan Mahanama gave the middle order more than just a solid look. If Jayasuriya and Kalu failed, as they did in the semi-final against India, Aravinda would counter-attack and the rest would play around him. Vaas, Wickramasinghe, Murali and Dharmasena, supported by the likes of Jayasuriya and Aravinda formed pretty much the ideal bowling line-up for the sub-continent conditions. They went on to beat Australia in the final by seven wickets, the first time a team batting second won the final of a world cup.

England hosted their fourth World Cup in 1999 and it marked the start of Australian domination. In the most one-sided final of the Wold Cup, Australia demolished Pakistan and then four years later in 2003, South Africa hosted the most spectacular and colorful World Cup, Australia steamrolled past spirited India. West Indies hosted the World Cup in carnival spirit in 2007, but was mired in controversies courtesy Bob Woolmer’s death and the time length coming in under scrutiny, and Australia completed their hat-trick by beating Sri Lanka.

The most 100s vs West Indies hit by any player is Sunil Gavaskar who struck 13 centuries defying the mighty Caribbean pace attack. Get into the live action of icc cricket world cup 2011 chat in my blog
